Bayside Apartments, Middle Park

How should we create aparments in a modern city that do not feel nebulous and as if they could be just about anywhere?

Warc Studio Architects were invited to provide a speculative proposal for five storey, contemporary luxury apartments with magnificent views overlooking Port Phillip Bay in the Melbourne suburb of Middle Park. Our proposal is to create a unique, site specific solution that drawers inspiration from vernacular 1950s and 1960s fibro shacks that traditionally lined Melbourne’s bayside suburbs and overlooked the water. The form of five “60’s boxes” are stacked on top of each other. A stagger was added to visually differentiate the form from the monolithic adjoining neighbours, as well as to maximise bay views from rooms and apartments located at the rear of the site. The apartments are to be clad in a contemporary form of raw cement sheet that is reminiscent of “fibro” lining while also being resistant to the harsh sea side conditions while. The apartments are simultaneously contemporary and luxurious but also curiously reflective of their bayside predecessors.
